So far there is no conservation manual available for the local residents and the management staff operating at the ground level to guide the local staff and the local residents in maintenance, conservation, rehabilitation and adaptive re-use of heritage properties. Therefore, the Galle Heritage Foundation has started to prepare a home owners repair/ preservation manual as a practical guide of the property owners for their easy reference for the maintenance, conservation, alterations and additions to the properties as well as for new constructions within the Galle Fort, to sustain the Outstanding Universal Value of the Galle Fort and adhering to the rules and regulations applicable to the Galle Fort by different authorities and institutions, while allowing for contemporary living standards to residents and other owners within the Galle Fort. This manual will be prepared in line with the UNESCO manuals that have already been prepared for similar historic living urban sites on the World Heritage List such as Kathmandu Valley in Nepal, Hoi An in Vietnam etc. It will be ready by end of 2024, and we believe that it will introduce best practices for conservation and help both the local residents and the staff to standardize conservation interventions to heritage properties within the World Heritage Site of Galle.
