Our History

During the past three decades, the Galle Heritage Foundation has carried out numerous projects, programs and activities. Among them the conservation of 55 residential buildings within the Galle Fort in 2008-2009 with funding assistance from the Dutch Government is a notable project contributing to the safeguarding of Outstanding Universal Value of the World Heritage Site. Other major conservation projects implemented were the rescue conservation of the Dutch Hospital in 2010 (in partnership with ICOMOS Sri Lanka with funding assistance from the World Monument Fund and American Express Bank) and the conservation of the Police Barracks of the Church Street in 2022-23 enabling adaptive re-use. The Galle Heritage Foundation acted as the joint client with the Department of Archaeology in conserving, landscaping and interpretive presentation of the defense work of the Galle Fort (implemented by the Strategic Cities Development Project with financial assistance from the World Bank) during 2020-22. It has conducted several awareness raising workshops for the residents, school children and the general public about the heritage values of the Galle Fort with the view of educating and obtaining their support for the preservation of its heritage. The Galle Heritage Foundation has initiated and carried out several heritage projects to document the Galle Fort’s built heritage. With regard to the development of visitor convenience facilities, the Galle Heritage Foundation has so far established toilet facilities at the Baladaksha Mawatha and near the Sun Bastion.
