Heritage Awards Program

Initiated as an annual program from 2023 by the Galle Heritage Foundation, the Heritage Awards Program aims to:

  • acknowledge and celebrate exemplary efforts and outstanding contributions of the property owners, architects, heritage practitioners, contractors, craftsmen etc., in enhancing the heritage values of the Galle Fort

  • promote further exemplary initiatives in terms of innovative approaches, sound technical achievements and best practices in heritage conservation/ design excellence for new interventions within Galle Fort and its buffer zone

  • encourage and motivate property owners, architects, heritage practitioners, contractors, craftsmen etc. to engage, either independently or through public-private partnerships to contribute sustainable well-being of the historic urban settlement and its buffer zone

The Awards are open to five (05) categories of interventions (viz., Maintenance, Conservation, Adaptive Re-Use, Alterations & Additions and New Designs in Heritage Contexts) to the private houses, government and commercial buildings, places of worship, hotels, shops, historic fortifications and associated structures, streetscapes, open spaces etc. within the Galle Fort and its immediate surroundings and to exceptional individuals such as craftsmen. The property owners and the Chartered Architects responsible for the completed projects are eligible for submission of entries. The Heritage Awards 2024 will be ceremonially held as the opening item of the Heritage Week.
