Filming and Photography within Galle Fort

Galle Fort offers stunning and varied photogenic world class backdrops and hence is a popular location for local as well as international commercial advertisements, events and films. The Galle Heritage Foundation give permission for filming and commercial photography within the Galle Fort. Please contact the office of the Galle Heritage Foundation for more details. The general conditions and the rates for filming and photography are given below. Please note that there is no charge for non-commercial photography by general visitors. However, the conditions for non-commercial photography are same as those for commercial photography.

Considerations for Filming within Galle Fort and for Making Requests Related to Filming
  • A written request, including relevant details related to the filming, must be submitted to the Department of Archaeology to obtain a written permit for filming. (Address: P.O. Box 532, Srimath Marx Pranandu Mawatha, Colombo 07) (Phone: 011 2692840 / 011 2692841)

  • If a drone camera is to be used for filming, permission must be obtained from the Civil Aviation Authority of Sri Lanka. (Address: No. 152/1, Minuwangoda Road, Katunayake) (Phone: 011 2358800)

  • To obtain final approval, the application form provided by the Galle Heritage Foundation must be properly completed and submitted to the Galle Heritage Foundation. The application form can be downloaded from the Galle Heritage Foundation's website at www.galleheritage.gov.lk.

  • The application and relevant details should be submitted to the Galle Heritage Foundation at least 3 days before the scheduled filming date.

  • After making the required payments, a receipt will be issued by the Galle Heritage Foundation. (Payments can be made to the Galle Heritage Foundation on weekdays between 9:00 AM and 3:00 PM.) Alternatively, payments can be transferred to the People’s Bank account, 013-1003-919 24746.

  • If all the necessary requirements for filming are met, final approval will be granted by the Galle Heritage Foundation.
