Visit the historic underground gunpowder magazines and ammunition bunkers of the Galle Fort, which were conserved and are being used as interpretive spaces which display faithfully replicated armaments, ammunition and human models to effectively interpret the military heritage of the Galle Fort. The display within the galleries covers all influential phases of the Galle Fort, namely, Portuguese, Dutch and the British occupation of the site.
The underground gunpowder magazine at the Black Fort offers the military history during the Portuguese occupation (16th and 17th centuries), while the historic workshop building situated at the same location provides heritage information of the native military heritage during the same period.
The underground gunpowder magazine at the Star Bastion is dedicated to the military history of the Dutch occupation (17th and 18th centuries).
In addition, the gun powder magazine at the Moon Bastion provides the visitors through illustrations and models, different stories based on events and incidents associated with the Galle Fort from the pre-historic era up to the end of the colonial period (20th century).
The visit to these galleries offers a novel experience to the visitors to Galle Fort. The entry tickets to these galleries could be purchased at the counters located at each of these galleries. The display galleries are opened from 8.30 am to 5.30 pm on all days of the week (including public holidays).
The underground ammunition bunkers located at Aeolus Bastion and in between Clippenburg and Aeolus Bastions, which offer military heritage associated with the British occupation (19th to 20th centuries) and the powder magazine at Utrecht Bastion (near Lighthouse) are currently accessible upon request, but these spaces will be opened to the public soon.
