An initial awareness program aimed at educating the business community and the general public of Galle Fort on the banned use of polythene and plastic products as well as the illegality of their disposal into the environment was launched 23rd July 2025.

This program is a collaborative effort by the Central Environmental Authority and the Galle Heritage Foundation, with the intervention of the Galle Police.

The primary objective of this initiative is to transform the Galle Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, into a plastic- and polythene-free zone, in line with national regulations banning such harmful products.
