A special discussion aimed at revitalizing the historic relations between Galle, Sri Lanka, and China was held on 15th June 2025 at the Galle Heritage Foundation. The meeting focused on re-establishing the longstanding bilateral cultural and trade connections that have historically existed between the two regions.
The Chinese delegation was led by Mr. Shi Xei, Director General of the Department of International Cooperation of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of China. He was accompanied by Ms. Yu Min, Director of the Asian Division, Ms. Mali, Advisor to the Asian Division, Ms. G. Lili, Cultural Counselor of the Chinese Embassy in Sri Lanka, Ms. Hu Hui, Second Secretary, and Mr. Jiang Chang, Third Secretary of the Chinese Embassy.
Representing the Galle Heritage Foundation were Chairman Prof. Deva Michael De Silva, Director Mr. Asanga Udula Dharmadasa, and Board Member Architect Mr. Varuna De Silva. Several other staff members including Mr. R.A.N.P. Madhushanka, Ms. P.G.N. Chandimali, Ms. B.S. Illeperuma, Ms. Anushi Chandima, Mr. A.J.G.G.S.S. Gihara, Ms. Ishani Priyadarshani, Mr. Saman Kumara, and Mr. Newmal Shirantha were also present.
During the meeting, Chairman Prof. Dev Michael Silva elaborated on the historical bilateral and commercial relations between Sri Lanka and China, with a particular emphasis on the deep-rooted historical ties between Galle and China.
Mr. Shi Xei, addressing the gathering, stated that every tourist from China should visit Galle, emphasizing its immense beauty and historical value. He described the Galle Fort as a site of great significance and expressed interest in organizing future collaborative programs. He also extended his heartfelt thanks to the Galle Heritage Foundation for the warm and respectful welcome extended to the delegation.
This discussion marked an important step in further strengthening the cultural and historical bond between the two nations, with a shared vision for future cooperation.
