Knowledge Interchanging Program between the Fort Cities, Galle - Mannar: Chapter VI

Southern Ministry of Education with the Galle Heritage Foundation of the Ministry of Law and Order and Southern Developments organized the Sixth Chapter of Knowledge Interchanging Program between the Fort Cities from 15-09-2017 to 18-09-2017 basing at Periyakuchchikulam School Hostel of Mannar District.

For this 6th sequel, from Mannar District, 25 students and 05 teachers were selected from 5 schools and from 05 schools of Galle District, 25 students and 05 teachers were participated with accompanying the Deputy Director of Education for Southern Province, the Deputy Director of Education Department (Planning) for Southern Province and staffs of Galle Heritage Foundation. Altogether, 70 numbers of participants participated in this workshop.

All the participants from Galle District left from Galle at 05.00 AM and reached Mannar by 03.00 PM. Mr. Kuredass, an Educational Officer of Mannar division arranged a site visit to the hanging bridge, constructed across the Aruvi Aru.

During the evening, we were welcomed grandly at Periyakuchchikulam School in the tradition of Tamil.

Inauguration ceremony of the program was held on 16.09.2017. In this function, following officials participated.

  1. Mr J. K. Rajapaksha, the Director of Office for National Unity and Reconciliation and the Deputy Director of Education (Administration) of Southern Provincial Education Department
  2. Mr H. L. Gunawardena, the Director of Galle Heritage Foundation
  3. Mr. Sumith Parakramavangsha, the Director (Planning) of Southern Provincial Education Department
  4. Mrs L. Malini Veniton, the Director of Education for Madhu Zone
  5. Mr A. Subaharan, the Assistant Director (informal) of Education for Madhu Zone
  6. Mr A. V. Jeyaseelan, the Principal of Periyakuchchikulam School
  7. Mr Arokyam Kroos
  8. Mrs Sita P Liyanage, the Administrative Officer of Galle Heritage Foundation and other staff
  9. Teachers and Students representing Galle and Mannar (Madhu) schools

Mr Arokyam Kroos delivered a speech on the historical and famous sites in Mannar District.

Thereafter, a program called ‘Life Tree’, an event for children to introduce and be at ease among them, was organized and children made a creation out of the relinquished liquid wastages.

Thereafter, a field visit was arranged to famous sites of Mannar District as Arippu Fort, Dorik Fort, Mannar Fort, and places near Baobab Tree. Therein, Mr M. Y. S. Deshapriya, the Officer in Charge for the Department of Archaeology of Mannar Zone, described all historical influences happened in the past because of the existence of Mannar Fort and Manthottam Harbour. Later, when we visited the Mannar District Secretariat, Mr M. Y. S. Deshapriya, the District Secretary of Mannar District welcomed us and took us to the fully constructed, new District Secretariat Building and shown us the new auditorium.

On the last day of the program, 17.09.2017, after the early morning physical exercises, we all visited the St. Lucia’s Church, Thiruketheeswaram temple, Mathota Raja Maha Viharaya, Giant’s Tank and Madhu Church and gathered useful information about them.

At the end of night, cultural ceremonies were staged. The welcome speech of the event was given by Mrs L. Malini Veniton, the Director of Education for Madhu Zone. Mr H. L. Gunawardena, the Director of Galle Heritage Foundation described the ideas behind organizing such program. Students of all 5 Schools of Mannar district and students from Galle District showed their talents through staging distinguished programs. Certificates and gifts are distributed appreciating their skilful performances. Souvenirs were gifted for all 10 schools participated in the program and certificates and souvenirs were awarded to the 10 teachers who guided the students to this program.

With that, the Sixth Chapter of Knowledge Interchanging Program between the Fort Cities ended with recognizing great success.
